Being Patricia

Patricia glanced at the watch on her wrist; it was exactly 5:30. “Time to wreak havoc things,” she thought. But she truly hoped she wouldn’t have to wreak anything. She took a deep breath and started her way back home. A fresh breeze slapped her face. Patricia glanced up at the sky, it was a bad day for bad deeds, Patricia thought. Behind misty cloud, the pale sun glowered dimly on the suburban houses and their green lawn. The world looked grey and depressing. There was nary a man outside, except for a few school kid coming back home. Patricia had chosen to hide in the street just behind hers, so it would be a short walk. But it seemed like it would take longer than usual.

Her heart pounded faster in her chest after every steps she took and her feet felt more and more sluggish, she didn’t want to do what she was about to do.  She halted abruptly. Perhaps she was wrong, the private laughter, the secretive smiles and the text messages. All were the result of her imagination. For half a second, she considered going back to Carly’s and forget about it all. For half a second… But who was she kidding? All the signs were lined up in front of her, how her father could have missed them was a mystery. She resumed her walk, this time with energy. As she neared her house, anger overcame fear. She raged inside, wasn’t a friend supposed to watch your back and protect what is yours? Jonathan and her mom were supposed to meet at 5:00pm. If her they truly had an affair, by now, they would be making love in her bed or maybe on the living room sofa. Uggh. The thought made her shudder. In a matter of seconds, she would know. She took her key from her skinny jean pocket, and slid it in the keyhole, she quietly opened the door.

The living room was empty and silent, she thanked god for that. She tossed her bag on the sofa and went upstairs, trying to be as smooth as a cat. She walked toward her parent’s room, their door was shut. What was she going to say if she saw her mom lying naked with Jonathan? She hadn’t decided yet but she pressed the handle anyway. Her mouth opened in stupor, she made a little squeak sound.

Jonathan was seated on her parent’s bed moaning, her mother was atop of him, thighs parted and naked. She was kissing his neck. For a moment, the lovers stood still, as if the lack of motion would hide their embrace. None dared to look at her, Jonathan stared at the wall in front of him and her mom straight ahead. Then slowly without moving her eyes from whatever she was looking, her mom retracted from Jonathan, and faced Patricia

“Look honey, I…,” she started but stopped when she realized what Patricia was looking at.

There was a red liquid dripping from her mother’s mouth, falling in drops on the brown carpet.

“Patricia, that’s nothing.” Her mom said, whipping her mouth with her hand. She came closer to her daughter. She opened her mouth to say something, and that’s when Patricia saw them... her fangs. She glanced at Jonathan’s neck. There were two small bloody holes on it, blood trickled from them.

Patricia took a step back. When did her mom turn into a cannibal? Even though the fangs had to be fake, they looked very sharp and very real. Patricia felt she didn’t know her mom anymore and she didn’t like it.

“What’s going on?” She screamed, glaring at her mom and then at Jonathan. “You guys don’t just fuck each other. You also drink each other’s blood?”She yelled. “Freaks!”

Jonathan opened his mouth to speak, Patricia saw fangs inside it. He said something, some miserable excuses probably, she didn’t listen. She looked at both lovers wondering if she wasn’t in the middle of a nightmare. “Freaks…” she repeated, this time lower.
